What is a taxi driver medical?

A taxi driver medical or private hire driver medical is a mandatory medical assessment you must pass to get your taxi license. The medical is carried out to ensure that you are safe to drive on public roads and carry members of the public in your vehicle.

What does the taxi
driver medical involve?

A typical taxi driver medical takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete and involves the following stages:

✔ Vision Check: Your doctor will ask you to read some letters on a chart to assess the strength of your vision. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, it is important that you bring these with you, along with your latest eye prescription.

✔ Blood Pressure Check: Your doctor will use a machine to check your blood pressure.

✔ Consultation: Your doctor will have a chat with you about your medical history and ask you about any health issues you may have, such as diabetes, epilepsy and more. Your doctor will also review your medical records at this stage.

Once the above steps are complete, your doctor will complete your taxi medical form.

How do I get my medical records?

You can obtain your medical records from your GP practice free of charge. Depending upon the council you apply for, you will either need your full medical records or a medical summary. Please get in touch with us on 0113 543 4588 if you are unsure about which one you need.
