To drive motorhomes of 3,500kg or more, the DVLA requires you to have a ‘C1’ license. If you passed your driving test before 1997, you will have automatically been granted C1 status. However, from the age of 70 onwards, the DVLA requires you to undergo a driver medical to renew your C1 license and continue driving your motorhome.
If you passed your driving test after 1st January 1997, you will need to undergo a C1 driver medical in order to obtain the rights to drive a motorhome.
The driver medical consists of a vision test, blood pressure check and some questions about your health.
At Auto Medicals, we have a large team of expert doctors specifically trained to undertake the C1 driver medical and provide it to you at an affordable price of just £60.
A typical motorhome driver medical takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete and involves the following stages:
✔ Vision Check: Your doctor will ask you to read some letters on a chart to assess the strength of your vision. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, it is important that you bring these with you, along with your latest eye prescription.
✔ Blood Pressure Check: Your doctor will use a machine to check your blood pressure.
✔ Chat: Your doctor will have a chat with you about your medical history and ask you about any health issues you may have, such as diabetes, epilepsy and more.
Once the above steps are complete, your doctor will complete your D4 medical form.
If your motorhome weighs more than 3,500kg and you fall within any of the following two groups who will need to undergo a C1 driver medical:
Passed Driving Test Before 1997: If you fall within this category, you will need to undergo a driver medical when you reach the age of 70 to retain your C1 license and continue driving your motorhome. You will then be required to renew your C1 category license every 3 years.
Passed Driving Test After 1997: In this case, you will not have automatically been granted the C1 category on your license. To drive a motorhome, you will need to undergo a driver medical to obtain C1 status.
You can book your C1 medical online or over the phone.
Online: Book online by clicking on a date and time that suits you using our booking form on this page above.
Call us: If you would like to book over the phone, just give one of our advisors a call on 0113 543 4588.
