What is a C1 driver medical?

To obtain a C1 category license, drivers must undergo a D4 medical and have their form completed by a suitably qualified doctor. The groups most commonly seeking a C1 medical are ambulance and paramedic drivers, and motorhome drivers.

The medical consists of a vision test, blood pressure check and some questions about your health.

At Auto Medicals, we have a large team of expert doctors specifically trained to carry out the C1 medical.

What does the C1
driver medical involve?

A typical C1 driver medical takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete and involves the following stages:

✔ Vision Check: Your doctor will ask you to read some letters on a chart to assess the strength of your vision. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, it is important that you bring these with you, along with your latest eye prescription.

✔ Blood Pressure Check: Your doctor will use a machine to check your blood pressure.

✔ Consultation: Your doctor will have a chat with you about your medical history and ask you about any health issues you may have, such as diabetes, epilepsy and more.

Once the above steps are complete, your doctor will complete your D4 medical form.

Who needs a C1
driver medical?

To drive a vehicle weighing between 3,500kg – 7,500kg you must have the C1 category on your driving license. If you passed your driving test before the 1st January 1997, you will have automatically been granted this category.

However, if you passed your driving test after this date, you must undergo a D4 medical to obtain the C1 category on your license.

Between the age of 45 and 65, you must undergo a medical every 5 years to keep your C1 category valid. From the age of 65 onwards, the requirement is to undergo an annual medical.
