To obtain a C1 category license, ambulance drivers, paramedics and student paramedics must undergo a D4 medical and have their form completed by a suitably qualified doctor. In fact, many paramedic university courses require students to have obtained the C1 category prior to enrolment.
The medical consists of a vision test, blood pressure check and some questions about your health.
At Auto Medicals, we have a large team of expert doctors specifically trained to carry out the D4 medical.
A typical ambulance driver medical takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete and involves the following stages:
✔ Vision Check: Your doctor will ask you to read some letters on a chart to assess the strength of your vision. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, it is important that you bring these with you, along with your latest eye prescription.
✔ Blood Pressure Check: Your doctor will use a machine to check your blood pressure.
✔ Consultation: Your doctor will have a chat with you about your medical history and ask you about any health issues you may have, such as diabetes, epilepsy and more.
Once the above steps are complete, your doctor will complete your D4 medical form.
Any ambulance drivers or paramedics, including student paramedics, who obtained their driving license after 1st January 1997 will need to undergo a D4 medical while applying for their C1 category license.
If you passed your driving test before this date, the C1 category will be automatically listed on your license and you do not need to undergo a medical.
